The Dominican Republic has become a renowned destination for bird lovers, thanks to its rich biodiversity in a relatively small area. One of the most outstanding species is the palm warbler, an endemic bird to the island of Hispaniola and national pride of the Dominican Republic. Its uniqueness and beauty make it an essential objective for bird watchers.
Our tour will focus on the majestic Sierra de Bahoruco mountain range, located in the southwest of the Dominican Republic. This area is considered the best place for bird watching in the country. No less than 30 of the 31 endemic species are found in this impressive mountain range, making it a bird lover’s paradise.
During the six days of our tour, you will explore a variety of fascinating habitats, from dense tropical forests to lush montane jungles. Arrival in Santo Domingo and transfer to the Sierra de Bahoruco
Upon arrival at the Santo Domingo International Airport, you will be received by our team and we will transfer you to the majestic Sierra de Bahoruco, located in the southwest of the Dominican Republic.
Along the way, you will appreciate the beautiful tropical landscapes and anticipate the exciting adventures that await you.
Once we arrive at the Sierra de Bahoruco, we will install you in our comfortable accommodation, strategically located to enjoy the best views and proximity to bird watching points.
In the afternoon, you will have free time to rest and acclimatize to the natural environment.
North slope of the Sierra de Bahoruco: Zapotén and pine forest
It begins early in the morning with an exciting departure in a 4x4 vehicle towards the northern slope of the Sierra de Bahoruco, where you will enter an impressive natural environment for an intense day of bird watching.
Throughout the morning, you will explore the enclaves of Zapotén and the pine forest, two outstanding areas for bird watching. There, you will have the opportunity to admire a wide variety of endemic and native species in their natural habitat. To keep your energy up during your excursion, you'll enjoy a tasty breakfast and a picnic-style lunch on site, including delicious sandwiches.
In Zapotén, you will have the opportunity to observe fascinating birds such as the Hispaniolan Nightjar (E), Hispaniolan Trogon (E), Green-tailed Warbler (E), White-winged Warbler (E), La Selle Thrush (E), Western Char-Tanager (E ), Hispaniolan Spindalis (E), Hispaniola Pewee (E), Hispaniola Emerald (E), Narrow-billed Tody (E), Antillean Piculet (E), Antillean Siskin (E), Hispaniola Crossbill (E), ( Hispaniolan) Kingbird loggerhead, Euphonia antillana, Elaenia of the Greater Antilles, Rufous-throated Solitaire, Bicknell's Thrush, Golden Swallow, Pine Warbler and Bullfinch of the Greater Antilles.
In the afternoon, you will enjoy an exciting excursion to La Mina in search of the "Lesser Poverty". This nocturnal activity will allow you to spot unique species such as the Least Poorwill (E), Hispaniolan Nightjar (E) and Northern Potoo.
After the day, you will return to Villa Barrancoli, where a delicious dinner awaits you to recharge your batteries and share the emotions experienced during the day.

North slope of the Sierra de Bahoruco: La Placa / Road to Pedernales
Start the day early with an exciting bird watching session in La Placa, an area of great bird interest on the north slope of the Sierra de Bahoruco. There, you will have the opportunity to spot species such as the Chestnut-breasted Cuckoo (E), Flat-billed Vireo (E), Antillean Goldfinch (E), Hispaniolan Piwi (E), Antillean Piculet (E), Broad-billed Tody (E), Euphonia West Indian, olive-throated parakeet, burrowing owl and ruffled dove. This experience will allow you to expand your knowledge of the region's birdlife and capture beautiful images of these species in their natural environment.
After the exciting observation session, you will return to Villa Barrancoli, where you will enjoy a delicious lunch to recharge your batteries.
Later, you will take the road to Pedernales, passing through the charming city of Barahona. During the journey, you will be able to enjoy the beautiful Caribbean landscapes as you head towards your next destination.
Upon arrival in Pedernales, you will stay in a comfortable accommodation where you can rest and relax. At night, you will enjoy a delicious dinner, savoring the local gastronomy and sharing experiences with your fellow travelers.
South Slope of the Sierra de Bahoruco: Camino de Alcoa / Camino al Paraíso
Start the day with an exciting bird watching session on the Carretera de Alcoa, a route famous for its wealth of birds. During the morning, you will have the opportunity to spot unique species such as the Hispaniola Crow (E), Hispaniola Parakeet (E), Hispaniola Parakeet (E), Hispaniola Nightjar (E), Hispaniola Trogon ( E), Green-tailed Warbler (E), Hispaniola Crossbill (E), Antillean Goldfinch (E), Golden Swallow, Flat Dove and Crab-eating Hawk. This section will allow you to admire the avian diversity of the region and capture unforgettable moments.
After the morning observation, you will enjoy a delicious lunch at La Cueva beach restaurant, located in the Cabo Rojo area. While you delight in the local flavors, you will be able to enjoy the beauty of the coastal environment.
Next, you will continue your route to Paraíso, where new adventures await you. In the afternoon, you will participate in an exciting excursion in search of the "Búho Caricenizo" along the slopes of La Ciénaga, along the Cachote road. This is a special moment to spot this endemic species (E) and immerse yourself in the tranquility and serenity of the surrounding nature.
After the day, you will return to your accommodation in Paraíso to rest and recharge your batteries for the exciting activities of the following day.
Cachote / Road to Sabana de la Mar
Start the day early with an exciting 4x4 drive to the Cachote cloud forest. This place is known for its natural beauty and its rich birdlife. During the morning, you will enjoy an exciting bird watching session, where you will have the opportunity to spot species such as the Eastern Chat-Tanager (E), Narrow-billed Tody (E), Hispaniola Spindalis (E), Hispaniola Trogon (E), Hispaniola Parakeet (E), Hispaniola Emerald (E), Rufous-throated Solitaire, Ruddy Quail-Dove and Scaly-napped Pigeon. This will be another memorable moment to immerse yourself in the avian diversity of the region and enjoy the beauty of the cloud forest.
After the observation session, you will enjoy a delicious breakfast in the place, surrounded by the tranquility of nature. Later, you will move to Sabana de la Mar to continue with the exciting experiences of the day. Along the way, you will stop for an invigorating lunch.
Once you arrive in Sabana de la Mar, you will settle into your accommodation and have free time to rest and relax. You can take the opportunity to explore the surroundings and enjoy the coastal beauty of the area.
Caño Hondo / Return to Santo Domingo
After enjoying a delicious breakfast, you will start an exciting day of bird watching in Caño Hondo. In this beautiful natural environment, you will have the opportunity to look for and spot species such as the Ridgway's Hawk (E), Hispaniola Oropendola (E), Antillean Piculet (E), White-necked Crow (E), Broad-billed Tody (E), Ruddy Quail Dove and Scale-naped Dove. This will be the perfect moment to immerse yourself in the avian beauty of the area and capture unforgettable moments.
After your morning birdwatching session, you'll head back to your hotel for a hearty lunch. You will be able to delight in the local flavors while sharing your experiences and anecdotes from this incredible bird watching trip. Later, you will start the way back to Santo Domingo. During the journey, you will be able to once again admire the beautiful landscapes of the Dominican Republic and reflect on the wonders of nature that you have had the opportunity to witness.
